I admit it. I didn’t want to write these weeknotes…
…but keeping them going still seems useful. This week has been hot, with easterly winds of the type that have the potential to dry my eyes out so they burn. I’ve avoided being outside for too long - so no golf competition play for me. It has been a health anxiety week for a few reasons, something I really hate but seem increasingly prone to as I get older. Taking action next week to alleviate the stress and get checked out.
The heat and anxiety has meant a lot of sudoku this week, with Good Sudoku being my go to app for that (and it has helped me learn new techniques for solving difficult puzzles in the last few months).
Reading:
Having really enjoyed re-reading one of the Rivers of London series I finished and moved straight into another. I have no idea what I’m going to read next.
Golf:
This week I’ve practiced when possible and had another lesson (so ended up with new stuff to practice from that alongside the existing things). It felt too hot for competition golf (and I was not feeling 100% towards the end of the week). Maybe missing the comps was good, since changing my grip has, as was to be expected, caused a few issues (that’s an English person’s understatement of the facts, incidentally).
My last practice session began abysmally, with an inability to hit the small ball first (the big ball being the earth, the one you always want to hit second). When I did hit the ball it mostly shot left with the occasional ping to the right. About two shots went straight, but I wasn’t convinced!
I went back to chipping practice with my new grip to try to find the ball and the ground again. This did work, because when I returned to full shots I hit a whole set of good ones, before skinnying a low running shot right and almost through the fence to the other golf course. That was what I had deemed to be “my last ball” of the practice, so I got another one out so as not to end on such a poor note before heading home.
Exercise:
Physio was good and I managed a home weights session when I realised that it was Saturday and not Sunday. (With no golf comps I really lose track of the days.) I did 25 minutes, which was 3 times around my circuit after the warm up exercises. It was a great effort for someone who did not want to do anything at all and just goes to show that I’m actually feeling pretty fit (when I make myself move).
I think I’d be feeling a lot better if I’d managed to get out walking too, but the weather was not conducive.
Food:
This was an odd week for food, because feeling a bit unwell meant I fasted most of one day (with no appetite) and then ate light after that. The heat meant we were back to barbecues and salad (and I’ve reached the point where I am over that, just wanting to cook something, ie anything, else).
Garden:
I did wash the bird baths and filled them, but failed to keep them topped up through all the hot days. Cut back the variegated ivy which is eating the fence and trying to get a hold on next door’s back shed. It is a monster.
Adventure:
No adventure this week.
Sewing:
No sewing this week (and not much thinking about it even).
Three ideas:
- Keep practicing golf
- Find a new book I want to read
- Take some breaths and try to stay calm
Work’s been emailing re PhD supervisions that I thought had been sorted, so I just need to reply to those questions.
